1. Ensure Australia's continued elite sporting success

The role of universities in supporting the Commonwealth Government’s strategy for supporting elite sport Recommendation 1 Develop a National Sports Facility Strategy that aligns with the Commonwealth Government Australian Sport Emerging Challenges New Directions Paper 2008. Aims: Undertake an audit of current sports facilities and determine future requirements. Local Government – identification of local government facilities and their usage patterns. State Government – determine future strategies for the development of sports facilities. Federal Government – provide resources to support the state government’s initiatives in line with the Commonwealth Government’s new directions paper for sport. Universities – determine universities role in supporting a national sports facility strategy by aligning the Federal Government’s annual funding to universities. Recommendation 2: Utilise the university sector more effectively in the provision of services to elite sport. Aims: Undertake an audit of the current provision of elite sport services offered by Universities, State and National sporting organisations, State institute and academy programs; Identify service providers who are capable of contributing to the elite sports system in a sustainable way – i.e. universities infrastructure, knowledge, research capabilities, community engagement and outreach programs; Drive a nationally coordinated funding program that supports elite sport – decentralization of programs, national coaching council, ITC programs, event management. Recommendation 3: Establish a clear role for universities to support the elite sports system (UK model). Aims: Conduct a national summit on the role of universities in delivery elite sport; Develop a national strategy to support elite sport; Provide resources through the Federal government’s allocation to universities to support elite sport.

2. Better place sport and physical activity as a key component of the Government's preventative health approach

The role of universities in supporting the Commonwealth Government’s preventative Health strategy Recommendation 1 In conjunction with the state and local governments facilitate a mini summit to develop regionally based health targets Recommendation 2 Identify the role of the University sector to support the intitiatives Recommendation 3 provide targeted funding to support the initiatives Recommendation 4 Ensure that physical education programs are compulsory in all relevant degrees and diplomas with a special interest in diversity groups Recommendation 5 Support health related initiatives at a local level by delivering activities through University facilities ie. School sport, vacation care after school care, aged care and child care Recommendation 6 Drive Health research across the University sector to maximise teh impact on the Commonwealth government health strategy Recommendation 7 Fund Universities to develop and drive health initiatives with their local communities

3. Strengthen pathways from junior sport to grassroots community sport right through to elite and professional sport

The Role of Universities in supporting all levels of support Recommendation 1 Provide access to facilities Recommendation 2 provide access to volunteers to support local sport ie sports science, coaching, administration Recommendation 3 Provide access to facilities to house coach education programs Recommendation 4 Undertake an audit of the current provision of support to grass roots sport offered by Universities Recommendation 5 Drive a nationally coordinated funding program that supports all levels of sport– decentralization of programs, national coaching council, ITC programs, event management. Recommendation 6: Establish a clear role for universities to support all levels of sport (UK model). Recommendation 7 Provide resources through the Federal government’s allocation to universities to support all levels of sport.

4. Maintain Australia's cutting edge approach to sports science, research and technology

The role of Universities in contributing to cutting edge sport Recommendation 1 Undertake an audit of what Universities are currently investigate in this area Recommendation Target research and innovation projects that are both applied and action research orientated Fund the development of sports engineering programs across Universities Recommendation 4 Develop Sports Science Accreditated programs across the University sector and fund through the Federal Governments University grants

5. Identify opportunities to increase and diversify the funding base for sport through corporate sponsorship, media and any recommended reforms, such as enhancing the effectiveness of the Australian Sports Foundation
